Attached is the content overview of all of the subject units that will be taught throughout the year as required by the Denver Public School System. Please feel free to look through it and discover what your child will learn throughout the year.

Title of Unit: Micro-Life
Author: Mandie Eldridge
Primary Subject: Secondary Life Science

Grade Level: 7

Introduction: This unit introduces the cell as the basic unit of life. Students will gain an understanding of cellular structure, function and its relation to the larger organism. At the end of this unit, students will be able to identify cellular structures as it relates to themselves and other larger organisms. This unit will teach them about

Unit Objectives (include 4 or 5):
  • Student will understand cellular structure, function and its relation to the larger organism
  • Student will be able to identify the following cellular structures: nucleus, cellular membrane, golgi aparatus, centrisomes, and ribosomes
  • Students will understand the difference between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells
  • Students will be able to use a microscope
  • Students will understand how pathogenic diseases are spread and how antibiotics are used

Time Required: 3 Weeks

Below are 5 videos we will watch throughout the Micro-Life Unit:

  • Inside the Cell - Video animation that explains how cells function and replicate.
  • Osmosis - A visual animation of how diffusion occurs through a membrane. Students will be able to visualize how the process occurs.
  • Pastuer's Germ Theory - A fun video animation that stars Louis Pastuer. In this video, he explains how he discovered the germ theory.
  • The Immune System - Gives an overview of how the immune system works. In this video, we are able to travel inside the human body to see how we protect ourselves from foreign invaders.
  • Flu Attack - This video explains how a flu virus is able to enter a cell and replicate.
